Robert Peterson, MD, PhD, MPH

Clinical Professor, Pediatrics, Centre for Community Child Health Research, BC Research Institute for Children's and Women's Health, UBC.

Dr. Robert Peterson is a former Co-Director of the Child & Youth Health Research Network. He is a recent arrival to the Child & Family Research Institute, and also Professor in the UBC Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Peterson, whose interests include knowledge translation, is also Director of the Provincial Child Health Services Network of BC. The goals of this network, coordinated by the Provincial Health Services Authority, focus on health care delivery and ensuring an evidence-based, coordinated approach to children's health care and services.

Dr. Peterson came to Vancouver in March 2005 after leaving his six-year position as Health Canada's Director General of Therapeutic Products Directorate. The pediatric clinical pharmacologist and medical toxicologist, working in drug development and clinical trial design, is still involved with Health Canada projects. One demonstration project under development is geared towards helping health care providers implement safe and effective drug prescribing practices. Web-based education modules on drug development - including what is known and not known about specific drugs - will allow providers to initiate their own learning and self-assess their knowledge base. Dr. Peterson envisions each module including hyperlinks to databases and relevant documents that will help providers translate and understand the technical and statistical data on the safety and efficacy of new drugs.
