Wanted: Aboriginal mental health research resources, projects and activities
The Aboriginal Health Research Networks Secretariat's Mental Health Working Group is undertaking an environmental scan project to identify recent and current Aboriginal mental health research resources, projects and activities in Canada in order to examine trends, gaps and future research directions. Please submit any information or contact suggestions to Donna Michal at donnamichal@shaw.ca.
IFCW WorldForum 2010 call for abstracts
The International Forum for Child Welfare (IFCW) WorldForum 2010 Program Committee invites researchers, practitioners, service providers and youth to submit abstract proposals for presentations, panels, workshops and posters. The forum theme is "A World Fit for Children: Advancing the Global Movement." Submission deadline is June 9, 2010.
Abstract submissions sought for Canadian Society for Life Sciences Research Conference
The Canadian Society for Life Science Research (CSLSR) is currently accepting abstract submissions for its 5th annual conference taking place at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec on Aug. 13-14, 2010. Deadline for submissions is July 2, 2010.
Poster submissions sought for CIHR forum on global child health
Trainees and clinical residents or fellows are invited to present their work in a poster session on May 4, 2010 as part of a CIHR forum on global child health. Poster title and brief summary must submitted by April 23, 2010.
District of Saanich invites cyclists to a family bicycle ride
The District of Saanich invites cyclists of all ages to a police-escorted family bicycle ride down Shelbourne Street on Sunday, April 11, 2010. The event aims to help promote Shelbourne as a bicycling corridor.
Student-run national undergraduate journal seeks submissions for global health issue
Undercurrent, a student-run national undergraduate journal publishing scholarly essays and articles that explore the subject of international development, is seeking submissions for a special issue on global health. Deadline is March 31, 2010.
Call for papers for international conference Viewing Anthropology through the Eyes of Children
Amsterdam's VU University is seeking papers for its conference The Doors of Perception: Viewing Anthropology through the Eyes of Children. The conference aims to develop perspectives on how research with children can contribute to anthropological epistemology and theory. Proposals from all disciplines are welcome. Submission deadline is May 15, 2010.
Caring Minds website provides teaching units on youth mental health
Based on the latest mental health research and input from teachers, mental health system users and service providers, researchers at UVic and York have launched the youth mental health website Caring Minds. The website offers four teaching units for Grades 7-12 with activities, lesson plans and resources.
Children's Health Policy Centre videos on preventing suicide in children and youth available online
SFU's Children's Health Policy Centre has produced a set of videos on preventing suicide in children and youth. The videos focus on key factors and warning signs, as well as special issues facing First Nations Youth. All videos are available online.
Call for papers for SFU Work in Progress conference
Organizers of SFU's Work in Progress interdisciplinary conference, June 12, 2010, are seeking abstracts. This event aims to provide students with a collegial academic forum in which to share research and refine presentation skills, offering unique opportunities to network and showcase budding research in the social sciences. Deadline for submissions is March 29.
CBC Documentary Hyper Parents and Coddled Kids available online
A documentary by Vancouver filmmakers which explores the cultural pressures on parents to be hyper-parents and the impact it has on their children debuted on CBC last night. The film is now available in its entirety online.
UNICEF and GPIA call for papers on adolescents girls' potential agency
Organizers of the UNICEF-GPIA conference on adolescent girls' potential agency to meet global demands welcome papers on building evidence and promoting effective policies. Deadline for abstracts is Feb. 7, 2010. The conference will be held in New York in April 2010.

Documentary explores connection between marijuana and mental health in young people
Teenagers who start smoking marijuana before age 16 are four times more likely to become schizophrenic, conclude some of the world's top schizophrenia experts whose research is featured in the CBC documentary The Downside of High, produced in Vancouver. The full video is available online.
Children's Mental Health Research Quarterly focuses on mental health implications of childhood obesity
SFU's Children's Health Policy Centre has released Vol. 4, No. 1 of the Children's Mental Health Research Quarterly. This latest issue focuses on links between mental and physical health and discusses the effectiveness and possible unintentional harms of childhood obesity prevention programs.
