Targeted prevention strategies needed to reduce injury burden among Canadian youth and young adults: study by CYHRNet Co-Leader
Injuries are a significant risk to Canadian youths and adolescents aged 12–24 years, and have only recently been recognized as a significant public health concern. A new study by CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater published in the International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion suggests targeted prevention strategies for sports-related, falls-related and recreation-related (biking/rollerblading) injuries are required to reduce the human and economic burden of injury in this vulnerable population.

Young women's interest in smoking & breast cancer risk info suggests real potential for health messages: study by CYHRNet Co-Leader
Young women's responses to health information about the links between smoking and second hand smoke exposure and breast cancer show real potential for effectively delivering health messages and programs that are targeted to reducing exposure to second hand smoke and active smoking in young women to reduce their chances for developing breast cancer, according to a new study by CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Joan Bottorff.

The Foundations of Child Health and Well-Being: discussion paper by CYHRNet Co-Leader
CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater has co-written a discussion paper providing recommendations to the Office of the Provincial Health Officer regarding its plans to develop a set of child health and well-being indicators for British Columbia. The paper identifies the major, modifiable factors and conditions that are known to enhance health in young people and recommends specific criteria for establishing indicators to address the modifiable health and well-being factors and conditions among children in BC.
Runaway girls reap strong benefits from nurse interventions: study by CYHRNet Co-Leader
A nurse intervention program that helps sexually exploited runaway girls re-connect to family, school and health care reduces trauma and restores healthy behaviors, according to a new study led by CYHRNet Co-Leader and UBC researcher Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc.

While attending university, men are equally likely as women to have been victims of physical or emotional violence, and that violence is often linked to drinking, says a new study led by CYHRNet Co-Leader and UBC researcher Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc.

Children who are depressed, anxious or aggressive in Grade One risk being victimized later on: study by CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater
Children entering first grade with signs of depression and anxiety or excessive aggression are at risk of being chronically victimized by third grade. That's the finding of a new longitudinal study by CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater that appears in the May/June 2009 issue of the journal Child Development.

Some teens using marijuana for relief, not recreations: new study by CYHRNet Co-Leader
When legal therapies let them down, some teens turn to cannabis. A new study, funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and published in BioMed Central's open access journal Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy, suggests that around a third of teens who smoke cannabis on a regular basis use it as a medication rather than as a means of getting high.
