Health Care Priority Setting Training Module Series

Due to resource scarcity in the health sector, determining what to fund and what not to fund is a necessary activity. This training module compiled by CYHRNet Oversight Committee Member Dr. Craig Mitton builds on CYHRNet's past workshops on health economics. It will introduce viewers to the program budgeting and marginal analysis process and how it can be applied in health care priority setting.

Presentation by CYHRNet Co-Leader on Building Hope: Fostering Resilience among Vulnerable Populations of Youth

CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc was a speaker at the Child and Family Research Institute's Research Week. On March 9, she gave a presentation titled "Building Hope: Fostering Resilience among Vulnerable Populations of Youth" where she discussed promoting resilience among vulnerable youth as well as the results of her Runaway Intervention Program which aims to reconnect sexually-exploited runaway girls with family, school and healthcare.The event was broadcast online and a video recording is now available.

Radio interviews on bullying and the WITS programs to prevent peer victimization

The WITS anti-bullying programs, developed by CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater, have demonstrated their value in reducing peer victimization and bullying in Greater Victoria schools. Now, with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the programs will be extended to rural and remote BC elementary schools. Dr. Leadbeater speaks with CFAX about bullying and how the WITS programs aim to prevent it.

SFU Children's Health Policy Centre - Videos on Preventing Suicide in Children and Youth

SFU's Children's Health Policy Centre has produced a set of videos on preventing suicide in children and youth. The videos focus on key factors and warning signs, as well as special issues facing First Nations Youth.

CBC Documentary - Hyper Parents and Coddled Kids

Are today's well-meaning parents giving their children a leg up in life, or creating problems that will last their child's lifetime? A documentary by Vancouver filmmakers which explores the cultural pressures on parents to be hyper-parents and the impact it has on their children debuted on CBC on Feb. 4, 2010.

CBC Documentary - The Downside of High

Teenagers who start smoking marijuana before age 16 are four times more likely to become schizophrenic, conclude some of the world's top schizophrenia experts whose research is featured in the CBC documentary The Downside of High, produced in Vancouver. The video premiered Jan. 28, 2010.

Epilepsy and Seizure Information for Schools

The BC Epilepsy Society has produced a new DVD entitled Epilepsy and Seizure Information for Schools. The DVD explains the facts about seizures and epilepsy, including recognizing seizures and first aid. It also describes associated learning impacts and teaching strategies to assist children with epilepsy. The video is available online. Copies may also be ordered by emailing outreach@bcepilepsy.com.

Radio interview on transitions to adulthood for vulnerable youth

CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater was interviewed on Dec. 18, 2008 on CFAX radio about the challenges vulnerable youth face in transitioning to adulthood and the CYHRNet-sponsored report "Listening to Vulnerable Youth: Transitioning to Adulthood in Victoria Columbia".
