Message from CYHRNet Executive Director

Dear CYHRNet Members,

On March 31, 2010, CYHRNet's funding from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) ended. We are now looking for new funding partners to support CYHRNet's activities and will keep you posted on any developments. If you are a potential funder (large or small) or have suggestions for us, we would be happy to hear from you.

In the mean time, we have put together this Special Update on Network Activities. Below are links to some exciting new CYHRNet resources. These videos, reports and training modules stem from research areas CYHRNet has supported over the past few years.

These, as well as many more of CYHRNet's successes, are celebrated in the Final Report of the BC Child and Youth Health Research Network

This report, submitted to MSFHR in March 2010, gives additional background about the resources shared here and details about CYHRNet's growth and development over the years.

We hope you enjoy these resources and find them useful. We also invite you to continue to watch www.cyhrnet.ca for any news related to CYHRNet's funding situation.

Best wishes,

Shelley Booth

Conversations with Vancouver Island Youth video:
Video captures aboriginal youth views on how science and traditional knowledge can address health challenges

This spring, CYHRNet was pleased to partner with University of Victoria's Office of Indigenous Affairs to support the development of Conversations with Vancouver Island Youth. This short video, produced and edited by First Nations youth, captures their perspectives on how science and traditional ecological knowledge can address health challenges among First Nations in BC's coastal communities.

In addition to this video, CYHRNet's support has also helped these youth create 20 other video stories on harvesting and preparing traditional foods.

The full Conversations with Vancouver Island Youth video, as well as a link to the other video stories, is available on CYHRNet's website here.

New reports on secondhand smoke and improving health for children & youth with chronic conditions

CYHRNet is very pleased to announce the publication of two new research reports. Click the titles below to view the full reports online.

Lead author: Dr. Jean-Paul Collet

This report is from the CYHRNet-supported August 2009 invitational workshop in Vancouver, Sharing the Knowledge, Bringing it Home. The report contains a concrete action plan to improve health outcomes for children and youth with chronic conditions.

Lead author: Dr. Joan Bottorff

This CYHRNet-supported community report grew out of concerns about the secondhand smoke exposure women and children experience as they go about their daily lives in the Hazeltons & Gitxsan Area. The report features the voices and ideas of the community and includes a discussion guide for continuing the dialogue about secondhand smoke

Please note: the reports are large and may take some time to download.

Coming soon: Child & youth injury indicators reports

On June 17, CYHRNet will be releasing two exciting new reports on child and youth injury indicators:

Measuring Injury Matters: Injury Indicators for Children and Youth in Canada, Vol. 1 and 2
Lead author: Dr. Ian Pike

This report results from a CYHRNet-supported project to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluating the health of Canadian children, youth and their families in relation to injury and injury prevention. Vol. 1 explains the process used by the Canadian Injury Indicators Development Team for developing the indicators, while Vol. 2 fully specifies the indicators for use by the Canadian injury prevention community.

Developing Injury Prevention Indicators for First Nations Children and Youth in Canada
Lead author: Dr. Ian Pike

This report results from a CYHRNet-supported project to develop a set of indicators for monitoring and evaluating the health of Canadian First Nations children, youth and their families in relation to injury and injury prevention. The report documents the work of the First Nations and Inuit Children and Youth Injury Indicators Project Task Group and illustrates the needs of those working to prevent injuries among First Nations Children and Youth.

Watch www.cyhrnet.ca for notice of the reports' availability.

Health Care Priority Setting Training Module Series

Resource scarcity in the health sector has made determining what to fund and what not to fund a necessary activity. However, research has shown that most health care organization decision-makers don’t know how to formally set priorities.

Researchers in BC have developed, evaluated and refined real-world methods, using a collaborative applied health services research program, to support health care priority setting. The results of their work are now available through the Health Care Priority Setting Training Module Series.

The series includes four 30-minute training modules that introduce viewers to priority setting and the PBMA process using slide presentations and a voice-over in non-technical language.

The modules are accompanied by a written summary and are available at no charge.
