Using our WITSŪ: A Workshop on the Prevention of Peer Victimization among Elementary School Children

Research shows that frequently bullied children struggle not only with poor peer relationships but also with getting help to end the victimization. In this workshop, Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater discussed recent research on the nature of elementary school bullying and used interactive sessions to demonstrate how the WITS programs work to prevent victimization.
Assessing, Triaging and Managing Youth who Self-Injure: A Workshop for Mental Health Clinicians

Self-injury is a serious clinical health problem that can be difficult to understand. This workshop, led by self-injury experts Dr. Mary Kay Nixon and Dr. Harjit Aulakh helped mental health clinicians understand the experience and motivation of youth who self-injure, introduced the latest related research, and provided practical strategies for working with these youth.
Working Smarter for Child and Youth Health: Improving Quality of Life in Our Region

CYHRNet was very pleased to support this interactive workshop which aimed to take action on six pillars vital to child and youth health: Arts & Culture, Food Security & Nutrition, Family Supports, Economic Development, Literacy & Education and Sports & Active Living. This workshop brought together local leaders from BC's Interior region in a dynamic discussion that integrated cutting-edge research with innovative practice.
Is There Any Harm in Asking? Discussing the Ethics of School-Based Surveys

CYHRNet, the McCreary Centre Society and UBC's Stigma and Resilience Among Vulnerable Youth Consortium presented this half-day workshop which brought together principals and superintendents, school district research oversight administrators, university ethics board members, community health stakeholders, and researchers to address concerns that often arise when doing health survey research in schools.
Engage, Identify, Examine: A Workshop on Participatory Photo Mapping

Building on Dr. David Brown's popular PPM presentation at CYHRNet's November 2009 AGM, the network was pleased to offer this PPM workshop which further explained this integrative tool for documenting and communicating the experience of place to community stakeholders and decision-makers. In this workshop, aimed at health researchers and clinicians engaged in community-based collaborative projects, Dr. Brown and his colleague Suzanne Galoucher from the University of Wisconsin-Madison introduced PPM techniques, provided illustrations of its applications and engaged participants in discussion about the use of innovative methods in collaborative community-based research.

Infant sleep problems are a serious impediment to children's healthy growth and development. This workshop, led by infant sleep expert Dr. Wendy Hall, examined questions such as what is normal infant sleep? What is an infant sleep problem? Why are infant sleep issues problematic? What treatments have been shown to be efficacious, and how can we link this to public health?
Networking for Child Health Forum

CYHRNet, in partnership with Community Action Towards Children's Health (CATCH), presented this networking forum, featuring presentations by Judy Gillespie (UBC Okanagan, School of Social Work) on newly completed research highlighting the networking structure of the North and South Okanagan early childhood development coalitions, and Lynn Malinsky (UBC Okanagan, School of Health and Social Development) on recently completed capacity building strategy for early childhood development in neighbourhoods showing contradictory socioeconomic and developmental indicators.
Healthy Youth Today, Healthy World Tomorrow
Feb. 11-12, 2010. Harbour Towers Hotel, Victoria, BC.CYHRNet was pleased to support this Centre for Youth & Society conference that looked at youth health from a holistic perspective, taking into account their psychological, physical, emotional, social and spiritual health, and how these areas are related to overall well-being. CYHRNet Co-Leader Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater was one of the keynote speakers for the event, along with Miss Hannah Taylor who founded the Ladybug Foundation to help end homelessness at the age of six.
