CYHRNet Third Annual Conference and AGM: Leaders Innovators & Healers in Child and Youth Health Research

November 25-26, 2008. Vernon - Silver Star Resort. Hosted by CYHRNet

CYHRNet's Third Annual Conference & AGM brought together researchers, students, policymakers and clinicians with a shared interest in child and youth health. The conference highlighted the latest research by some of the province's most prominent child and youth health researchers and prompted discussion among attendees about the practical applications of their findings.

Promoting Health & Reducing Risk: Evidence Based Programs that Support Child and Youth Mental Health in Canada

November 13, 2008. Vancouver - Blue Horizon Hotel. Hosted by CYHRNet

This workshop allowed researchers to promote their evidence-based mental health interventions to end-users of research, including 14 representatives from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The event provided an opportunity for these end-users to connect with child and youth health researchers and learn more about successful Canadian programs which are available for implementation, including interventions to prevent bullying, address teen depression, treat young children with anxiety disorders and support aggressive teens and their caregivers. It featured a presentation by Shane Koyczan, author of Stickboy.

Street Youth Health Interventions Workshop

October 25, 2008. Victoria - Victoria Truth Centre. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

This intensive workshop offered end-users of research from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, public school districts and other community/service organizations an opportunity to converse and brainstorm with leading experts in the field of adolescent healthcare. Topics included sexual exploitation and accessing resilience, dual diagnosis and street youth, Aboriginal street-involved youth, suicide and street involvement entry and exit. Participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to network and exchange information and ideas.

Introduction to Health Economics: A One-Day Workshop

September 19, 2008. Victoria - University of Victoria. Hosted by CYHRNet

This workshop strengthened the link between researchers and end-users of research as it taught both groups complementary skills. Researchers learned how to better address economics in tandem with important clinical issues in their work. Similarly, decision-makers learned how to critically appraise economic evaluations of new interventions. Through the sharing of case studies in child and youth health, both parties were able to gain a new appreciation of the ways through which health economics can impact and direct how research is conducted and applied.

Knowledge without Harm: Strategies for Ethical Research with Youth

April 25-26, 2008. Vancouver - Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

Attended by researchers, trainees, youth and representatives from community/service organizations and ethical review boards, this conference featured strategies for conducting ethical research with youth. The event promoted links between researchers and research end-users, evinced by a presentation on community collaborations and research by the McCreary Centre Society and BC's PLEA Community Services Society. McCreary, a research organization, and PLEA, an organization of research users, presented information about their newly-formed research partnership.

Moving Upstream: Evidence for Early Intervention in Mental Health.

February 14, 2008. Vancouver - Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

This colloquium focused on early detection and treatment of mental disorders and featured leading experts from BC and beyond. What was especially exciting was the diverse nature of the attendees - only about nine per cent identified as researchers, while almost 70 per cent identified as clinicians/service providers and another 12 per cent as policymakers/planners/administrators. As a result, this colloquium was a perfect opportunity for presenters to discuss practical applications of their research with those that could most likely put it to use.

Identity, Positive Growth, and Personal Wisdom During Early Adulthood

January 22, 2008. Victoria - University of Victoria. Supported by CYHRNet.

This lecture, given by former CYHRNet Oversight Member Dr. Sherry Beaumont to some 30 University of Victoria students, was part of the university's Social Psychology Seminar Series.
