Playing it Safe: Strategies to Reduce Environmental Risks to Child Health

Dr. Ben-ARiehNov. 7 (Training Opportunity for Child Care Professionals) and Nov. 9 (Training Opportunity for Nursing & Health Science Students), Prince George

These workshops, sponsored by Health Canada, Canadian Partnership for Children's Health & Environment (CPCHE), UNBC, BC Environmental and Occupational Health Research Network, YMCA, Child Care Resource & Referral and supported by CYHRNet and the BC Rural and Remote Health Research Network, shared important information about environmental risks to child health and provided simple child proofing tips and strategies to reduce the risks to preconception, prenatal and child health.

 

CYHRNet's 4th Annual Conference & AGM: Engaging Youth, Families & Communities in Health Research

Nov. 2 & 3, 2009. Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa.

This exciting event brought together researchers, students, policymakers, clinicians and others interested in child and youth health research to learn about engaging youth, families and communities in health research.

 

Clinical Perspectives on Sexual Health 2009 Pre-Conference Session - BC Abortion Update: Using Experience to Guide Research to Guide Care

This free session, presented by CART (Collaborative Abortion Research Team) and co-sponsored by CYHRNet, brought together front-line workers in sexual and reproductive health with academics, researchers and experts to share and improve knowledge of abortion care best practices in BC.

PATHS for Youth: A One-Day Workshop on Pregnancy, Alcohol, Tobacco and Health Strategies for Youth

Sept. 23, 2009. Segal Graduate School of Business, Vancouver. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

Co-sponsored by CYHRNet, the Women's Health Research Network and UBC Okanagan's Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention, this workshop brought together researchers and practitioners working with youth to share findings, set priorities and identify ways to collaborate in future research projects that address both tobacco and alcohol use during pregnancy in teens and young women.

From Child Welfare to Child Well-Being: The Child Indicators Perspective

CYHRNet, the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport, the Office of the Provincial Health Officer and the Canadian Institute for Health Information presented this guest lecture by Dr. Asher Ben-Arieh, a leading international expert on social indicators related to child well-being. Dr. Ben-Arieh discussed the history of the child indicators movement, recent changes and shifts in the field and predictions for its future.

 

Workshop on Participatory Photo Mapping (PPM)

June 4, 2009. Vancouver - UBC Point Grey. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

This four-hour conference introduced some 30 participants (with an additional 12 attending via WebEx online teleconferencing) to Participatory Photo Mapping (PPM), a technique designed to document the experience of place in the built environment, and integrate this experience into a knowledge sharing tool.

Child and Youth Mental Health Day

May 7, 2009. Vancouver - SFU Harbour Centre. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

Co-sponsored by CYHRNet and the F.O.R.C.E. Society for Kids' Mental Health, this event featured Dr. Bill Beardslee, a specialist in working with families where a parent has a mental health problem, as well as several other presenters. Additionally, Vancouver graphic facilitator Avril Orloff, pictured right, did a graphic recording of Dr. Beardslee's address. Videos of the conference can be seen on CYHRNet's YouTube channel.

It's Not Too Late: Adolescent Resilience and Empowerment

April 2-3, 2009. Victoria - Harbor Tower Hotels. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

This two-day conference was an exciting opportunity for researchers, service agencies and all those with an interest in youth resilience. It featured keynote speaker Dr. Marc Zimmerman, Chair of the Department of Health Behavior & Health Education in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan as well as a variety of other speakers. It also featured claymation videos produced by the youth of the Aboriginal Next Steps Project and youth-written rap on the subject of resilience from the Nanaimo Youth Services Association.

Aboriginal Child and Youth Mental Health Forum

March 9, 2009. Vancouver - Marriott Pinnacle Downtown. Co-sponsored by CYHRNet

Co-sponsored by CYHRNet, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Network Environments for Aboriginal Research (NEAR BC) and the First Nations Health Council, this one-day forum built on the ministry's Aboriginal Child and Youth Mental Health Plan and focused on regional implementation with key stakeholders, service providers, community representatives and researchers in the Vancouver Coastal Region.
