Priority Initiative: Child and Youth Health Indicators related to Injury Prevention
Co-leader: Ian Pike, PhD
The Canadian Injury Indicators Development Team has received funding from CIHR for the development of injury indicators for Canadian children and youth. Their research resulted in the development of 34 injury indicators in the following domains:
Each indicator has been fully defined and specified, and now requires further research in order to demonstrate their utility to further injury-related policy, practice and research. While this research was underway, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada contracted Ian Pike and Alison Macpherson to develop injury indicators for First Nations and Inuit children and youth, in a parallel project. While the indicators are less well developed at this point, the goal is to bring these two processes together in the future. A subsequent research grant which has been secured from CIHR (with CYHRNet and BC Child Health support), will support research on five injury prevention policy indicators:
Each of these indicators will be evaluated on three levels: policy level, the risk factor level and the outcome level. This research will be conducted over the three year period 2008-2011.
Finally, with CYHRNet support, the team has also held a recent Injury Indicators forum in Vancouver (February 25-26, 2008) with the purpose of sharing knowledge on child and youth injury prevention, and to prepare for an upcoming CIHR team grant which, if successful, will provide support to the team for up to five years.
Wipe Out
Wipe Out is a documentary film which premiered at the Vancouver International Documentary Film Festival. The film - produced by Lionel Goddard, one of Canada's top documentary film makers, and featuring Canadian Olympic gold medallist snowboarder Ross Rebagliati - tells the story of three young BC men who suffered traumatic brain injuries while pursuing extreme sports. Through their stories, the documentary explores the science of thrill-seeking and reveals how cultural forces and ignorance are propelling young men to dangerous new heights. CYHRNet Co-Leader Ian Pike, through his role as director of the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit, sat on the film's Advisory Committee. VideoWipe Out was produced in part by the Knowledge Network.
